The microphone measures sound intensity in real time against the room's background noise, which is calibrated at start-up. The stronger the breath or applause, the more intense the reaction: no on/off effect, but a continuous response.
Where they work best
In lounge areas, on stage with a presenter, at trade show stands and at company parties. In very noisy settings we use directional or contact microphones, or the mixer's audio feed for sound-reactive visuals.
